I was at a local festival in our city and I saw a man selling soaps, when I asked about what was in it he told me the usual ingredients and then instead of lye he used ash. how does this process work? because I was only told that you can use lye.

That man is a good example of someone who’s very good at selling smoke (which goes well with ashes, btw). As you correctly write, soap is made with “lye” - and because “lye” could be made from ashes, some confusion may arise. And smart marketers know how to exploit it!
