[WP Install] Step 4. Downloading WordPress

Filed under: WordPress — martad @ 11:27 am

This Step is sometimes referred to as “Downloading the source code”. Now because I’m no computer geek-wiz (and never had any aspiration to becoming a programmer, as previously stated), anything called or referred to as “source code” makes me fear I might have ended up in the wrong place.

So please pretend you’ve never heard of this “source code” bit, and just follow these simple instructions for obtaining a copy of the WordPress program:

A.    Use Safari to go to the WordPress download page.

B.    Click on the .tar.gz format button. Unless things change on the WP downlod site, the right file in the right format for you is called latest.tar.gz - and by the by, clicking on latest.tar.gz will directly start the download.

C.    On my G4, I have instructed Safari to place new downloads on the desktop. If that’s your case, too, then once the download is complete, you’ll find on your desktop a file called wordpress-2.1.3.tar.gz.

Notes:

>     As you might gather, these instructions were written updated when the latest version of WP was version 2.1.3. Although this is often difficult to predict with Open Source software, one would hope that new releases won’t substantially change the above location and naming conventions.

>>    If you want to download WP directly to your deployment directory, you don’t really need this tutorial. The detailed installation instructions in WordPress Codex explain how to do this.

>>>   If you are a Windoz (PC) computer user, my instructions will need some tweaking. If translating my instructions turned out to be too confusing, I suggest that you toddle along to some Website that supplies Windows-specific WP install instructions, such as The Tamba2 WordPress Guides (for PC users). Or you can refer to Brandon Booth’s Everyman’s Guide to WordPress (clicking this link will start the download of Brandon Booth’s Everyman’s Guide to WordPress).
