[WP Install] Step 3. Minimum requirements for running multiple installations of WordPress

Filed under: WordPress — martad @ 2:42 pm

Because I am describing the installation procedure for getting multiple WP blogs up and running on a remote host, the following requirements need to be ascertained for your Web host, not your local computer. (It is of course possible to install WordPress locally, that is, on your own computer - however, this is a completely different scenario, and I’ll be adding instructions on how to install WP on Mac OSX Panther and Tiger in some future article….. not here!)

For WordPress (up to version 2.1.3) to run smoothly on your hosted Web servers,

A.    Your host must provide the following:

a. - PHP 4.2 or higher
b. - MySQL 4.0 or higher
c. - For the installation to work as described here, the Apache Web server, complete with the mod_rewrite module.

B.    You must know how to perform basic Website maintenance tasks, which might include the following:

a. - Work with files and directories on a remote host.
b. - Set up a MySQL database on a remote host.
c. - Change file and directory permissions.
d. - Manage Web server settings and edit .htaccess files.

C.    You must have a hosting account that allows you to use PHP, and set up and maintain at least one MySQL database. Console access by Telnet/SSH is useful, however not indispensable if you follow the instructions in this tutorial.

Life is very easy for me at pair.com, because with our Advanced hosting plan they provide all the minimum required tools for WP installation and maintenance, as well as an easy-to-use graphical interface to some of the most “geeky” instructions.

  • In case you were directed here through a link on somebody else’s Website, and missed out on the necessary previous steps and background details, I am describing here how to install WordPress on pair.com, for someone who (like me) uses a computer running Mac OS X.
